A wintry November is in the books, but it looks like warmer days are ahead

At last the frigid month of November 2014 is behind us and we can finally flip the calendar to find that…the weather has gotten even colder to start December. Fear not, however, as there are promising signs that things may be getting warmer for us in the future and not just for a day or two. There lies before us the realistic possibility that some mild air will build into the Midwest, pushing the mercury back into the 30s, and in some cases, the 40s by this weekend and even next week.

First, let’s look at some of the chilly November data in Rochester.

November 2014 was the sixth coldest on record and even though rainfall was much below normal, snowfall was three inches heavier than usual.

There looks to be a transition to a warmer scheme of weather starting this Friday or Saturday and possibly lasting into next week as the jet stream aloft splits and the northern branch drifts to the north bottling the really frigid air up in Canada and the southern branch shifts southward, leaving our region with drier weather and seasonably mild conditions.

Cold air remains entrenched in the Upper Midwest to start the month of December as the jet stream is positioned to our south allowing that frigid air into the region.

The jet stream splits this weekend, potentially leading to a drier than normal and warmer than normal pattern for a while.

The latest 6 to 10 day outlook for the Climate Prediction Center shows the entire country in a high probability of “warmer than normal” temperatures for next week and possibly through the middle of the month.
