A warm and very humid start to the weekend

Our break from heat and heavy humidity is over and now the Deep South-style weather we experienced last weekend and early this week is returning in time for this weekend. In typical southern Minnesota and north Iowa fashion, it’s going to be here for a limited time only, but for at least two days we’ll be talking about heat indices and dew point temperatures during pretty much each weather-cast. Look for high temperatures in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees Friday and Saturday locally with dew points in the lower and possibly middle 70s for most of the day, certainly adding to the “feels like” situation. Heat indices will be well into the 90s both days with the only relief coming from a few thunderstorms that are expected to rumble through the region late Friday night and for parts of Saturday in advance of the cold front that will be triggering those rain chances and then drawing in slightly cooler, less humid air from Canada for the tail end of the weekend. Of course, when you combine heat, humidity, and chances of thunderstorms in July, you immediately think about severe weather potential and yes there will definitely be a concern in that regard as we move through Saturday.

There will be a "Slight Risk" of severe weather for most of the area Saturday with large hail, damaging winds, and some torrential rain possible.

It looks like the severe weather threat will be focused around the midday and afternoon hours before that front edges its way eastward. It likely won’t be an all-day rain event, but rather scattered storm activity, allowing sunshine in most spots to heat things up and make for a sultry Saturday.

If you’re heading up north for the weekend here’s your Precision Forecast “Cabin Cast.”

The same cold front we'll be experiencing this weekend will bring some thundershowers to the northern part of the region Saturday, then cooling things off for Sunday.
