A stormy, humid weekend may be ahead of us

After a relatively quiet work week, it looks like our weekend is looking a bit stormy and possibly rather soggy. A storm system from the west is going to work to pull in extra moisture ahead of its arrival¬†over the next couple of days, setting us up for some abundant and even, in some cases,¬†excessive rainfall while severe activity may occur in some spots. Look for a few scattered, fairly light, showers and thunderstorms for our Thursday afternoon and evening, and then more of the same on Friday. The heaviest, most humid, and unstable air will make its way in on Saturday, creating a high level of instability in the region. There will be chances of strong lines of thunderstorms late Friday night and then late Saturday afternoon and evening. Some of those may become severe with heavy downpours of rain possible. Another round of strong storms will be possible Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening and even Sunday night. Sunday’s storms appear to pose the greatest threat of tornado activity and flooding. Rainfall over the weekend may reach two or three inches.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of our local area in the slight risk of severe weather for Saturday afternoon and evening. Strong winds and heavy rainfall appear to the be the primary concerns.

As it stands now, if we receive the two to three inches of rainfall we’re expecting over the weekend and early Monday, our rainfall total in Rochester for June would be around seven inches, which is getting close to double the normal amount for the month.
