The cut-off low that has been plaguing our area for most of the past week continues to keep things fairly unsettled for us today, but at least just sprinkles and very light, brief rain showers are expected in what looks to be the last day we’ll be in this gloomy scenario.  The storm system will finally begin to drift eastward tonight, leaving the area tomorrow and allowing us to warm up for our Wednesday.  Rainfall totals Monday were impressive for many of us, especially along and east of a Rochester to Charles City, Iowa line.  Here’s a look at some of the rainfall amounts from early Monday through early Tuesday:

The highest rainfall amounts Monday were in the eastern half of the area.

The rainfall total for September in Rochester now stands at 2.45 inches (a deficit of 0.59″) and for the year, we’re 1.37″ below normal.  Monday’s 0.64″ of rain made for a gloomy, dreary day, but was certainly beneficial, cutting our monthly deficit in half.

In a word, our weather this week certainly has been gloomy thanks to persistent cloud cover from a large scale storm system that has really taken its time in crossing the Upper Midwest, but a couple of other words could absolutely be contenders as well including: murky, dreary, and even soggy as showers have been in the area fairly consistently since Monday.  Here in Rochester, we’ve picked up 2.73″ in the past week and have measured a grand total of 5.01″ of rainfall so far this month.  While that’s no where near the June record of 12.51″ set back in 2000, it certainly is above normal for the month which averages 4.00″ overall and we still have several days left to add on to that total.  The good news is this storm system is going to exit our local area tonight, leaving just a trace amount of additional rainfall in our rain gauges this afternoon and evening and then we’ll get a little break from rain chances for a couple of days.  Friday still looks dry with some sunshine also likely on Saturday before a few late day showers and thunderstorms will show up on our doorstep from the west, possibly lingering into Sunday and Monday as another storm system pushes into the region.  Rainfall amounts are likely to range from half an inch to an inch in those upcoming days, which isn’t excessive but it’s definitely not what we were hoping for as a nice dry, sunny spell would be much preferred!

The storm system that brought heavy thundershowers to most of our local area Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning is still in the area, but the heavy rain threat has moved on to the northeast. We’ll have a few light showers through the morning and midday with perhaps a little afternoon sunshine breaking through, allowing us to warm into the lower 70s. Some thundershowers are likely to develop in the afternoon and evening, but again things will be on the lighter side and severe weather doesn’t appear to get a big concern, but pea sized hail may occur in a couple of the thunderstorms later today.

While last night’s storms were not severe, there were some reports of locally heavy rainfall, hopefully greening things up a bit for our lawns, gardens, and fields. Here’s a look at some of those local rainfall totals:

If you’re thinking our area has been especially gray and wet so far this year, you’re absolutely correct in your analysis.  It has been exceptionally wet!  Going back to the beginning of 2011, Rochester for instance, has had the wettest year to this date since 2001 and the 6th wettest overall in recorded history. 

Through April 26th, Rochester International Airport has received 9.03 inches of precipitation.  This was 2.89 inches wetter than the 1971-2000 normal of 6.14 inches.  The table below contains the ten wettest starts to a year at Rochester MN.

What a nasty turn of events for us in our weather picture over the past 24 hours!  While it certainly could be worse–we don’t have tornadoes or heavy snow in the region, thankfully–but it absolutely could be better.  We’ve gone from sunny skies and highs in the lower 60s Monday afternoon to dreary, cool, damp weather today with temperatures in the 40s and things won’t be improving any time soon, unfortunately.  The storm system that is creating this wet and gloomy scene is slowly going to move out tomorrow, but clouds and chances for scattered light rain showers will remain in the area for the next two days.  Totals today may end up reaching one to two inches locally while the next couple days will likely only yield a tenth to a quarter of an inch at most with hit-and-miss showers common in the forecast picture.  Here’s a look at how much rain has fallen in our area since last evening:

It certainly has been a rather gray and wet day so far for us thanks to the passage of a thunderstorm complex through the heart of our viewing area.  While flooding hasn’t been an issue thus far from these heavy showers, there still exists the potential for some rising river levels and wet basements as rain remains in the forecast for parts of today and tomorrow.  A Flash Flood Watch is in effect until midnight for most of our local area because of the possibility of extra showers falling on already saturated soil so be on the lookout for some localized flooding.  Some spots west of I-35 received more than two inches of rainfall overnight including Fairmont (3.25″), Welcome, MN (2.50″), Blue Earth (2.84″), Waseca (2.66″), and Winnebago, MN (2.88″.)

Earlier today, parts of northeastern Iowa had to deal with a massive deluge of rain from a line of thunderstorms that just didn’t want to move out.  Those storms have since moved along and weakened significantly, but not before dropping huge amounts of rainfall in just a few hours shortly after sunrise.  We have plenty of humidity in the air today ahead of an approaching cold front, so as more thundershowers crop up in the area in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin, there will be a chance for a few heavy downpours that may yield an inch or two of rain.  The rain chances will taper off late tonight and then drier, less humid air will flow into the region for tomorrow.  In the meantime, here are some of this morning’s rainfall totals.

Here’s the latest roundup of local rainfall totals through noon today.  These are mostly 24 hour measurements for the various locations.  We’ll have more updates and hopefully a grand total by tonight as the showers taper off.  Rochester had a deficit of 3 inches coming into this rain event yesterday and has now essentially cut that in half with at least 1.50 inches registered between Tuesday and Wednesday.  We’ll continue to receive light showers through the afternoon with just sprinkles around in the early evening hours.
