A Snowy Start to the Week

The Midwest region is being hit with a one-two punch to start the week as two storm systems affect the region today and tomorrow and then move eastward to pummel the East Coast in the middle of the week.  The first storm is bringing light snow to our local area today and will continue to slowly pile up the accumulations through the daylight hours and then through tonight.  A Winter Weather Advisory has been posted for most of our viewing area across northern Iowa and Wisconsin as well as the majority of our southern Minnesota counties.  The exception will be along and west of I-35 where a Winter Storm Warning will be in effect until 6:00 AM Tuesday as totals there will be slightly higher.  Look for 3 to 6 inches of accumulation overall in the Advisory counties, including Rochester, Austin, Mason City, and Decorah with up to 8 or 9 inches in Albert Lea and for locations to the north and northwest toward Mankato.  The first wave will fade away late tonight and move to the east, slowly then merging with a larger, more potent storm that will bring a huge amount of snow to the central part of the Midwest, while we’ll receive only a dusting of an inch or so locally.  Chicago is expecting around 20 inches from this second storm Tuesday through Wednesday along with blizzard conditions as gusts will be up to 40mph, so if you’re heading there or to St. Louis, expect major delays and possibly impassable roads.  We’ll have pretty nasty winds here as well, with gusts reaching 30mph, likely leading to blowing snow and poor visibility tomorrow and tomorrow night.  Here’s a look at the latest snowfall forecast for our local area through tomorrow.

The Midwest snowfall forecast. Areas between St. Louis and Chicago will see 18+ inches of snow while Indianapolis and locations to the south and southwest may have to deal with a nasty ice storm.

The highest amounts of snowfall will be measured in south central Minnesota locally while Rochester is expecting a moderate total of roughly 5 inches by Tuesday afternoon.

Dec 15-16 snowfall, Winter Weather Advisory

Winter Weather Advisory extended until 3PM Thursday

10:30am update: The Winter Weather Advisory has been extended until 3 PM. The band of snow is not dissipating as quickly as we were forecasting….it may snow forever! Just kidding. Newest snowfall totals are below.

9:00 am update: Snow continues to hang on…roads are slick and it’s a slow go. Steele, Waseca, and Rice counties have been added back into the Winter Weather Advisory to account for the band of snow that could still produce another inch or two into the afternoon.

Earlier:

Here’s a look at snowfall totals that have been reported. We’ll keep this updated. Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon for the brown shaded counties (see pic). Maybe another 1″ or so of snow before the afternoon, when this all starts to come to an end. Some flurries will take us into the evening.

The Anniversary of the Great Blizzard of 2009

High pressure is making for a cold, but peaceful day for us in southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa today as skies are going to be sunny and the winds will be as close to calm as they get this time of the year.  However, a year ago it was quite the opposite.  The heaviest snow producing storm of the season was bearing down on our area on this date, not only creating concerns about heavy snowfall, but also the threat of blizzard conditions as the winds surrounding the storm were expected to be in the 30 to 40 mile per hour range, a huge headache for those traveling around our local area and a factor that would keep snowplows on the roads for a couple of days with no time to rest.  The snow started falling just before sunrise on Tuesday the 8th, slowing traffic down a little during the day, but east winds ahead of the low pressure center were only in the 10 to 15 mile per hour range, so blowing snow wouldn’t become a factor until later in the night.  Snowfall became heavier late in the afternoon and evening while the winds began to get gusty.  By midnight on Tuesday the 8th, we had 8.3 inches of snow on the ground in Rochester, a record for that date, but the snow wasn’t finished yet.  In fact, another 4.5 inches fell between midnight and mid morning on the 9th.  Meanwhile, the National Weatehr Service issued a Blizzard Warning for the entire viewing area as visibilities had fallen down to less than a quarter of a mile and snow was drifting badly.  Winds turned to the northwest on Wednesday, the 9th and were consistently gusting beyond 30 miles per hour while colder air was pouring into the region behind the storm system which by then had begun to move to our east.  Temperatures fell dramatically during the day, starting out in the lower 20s first thing in the morning, and then falling into the single digits in the afternoon as the snow tapered off.  The official low for the day was -3 at 11:59pm with wind chills around -25 by the late evening.  Traffic was paralyzed all day long in the blizzard that encompassed the entire region while overall snowfall totals ranged from 9 to 16 inches, 12.8 inches of which was measured in Rochester…and let me tell you, it was not easy to measure that snow because of the drifting!

The blizzard of December 8-9, 2009 was the first major snow event of last season in a month that featured an overall snowfall total of 26. inches.   That’s more than twice the average snowfall for December.  Thankfully, we don’t have anything remotely resembling that storm in our current forecast, but there will be chances for minor snow accumulations tomorrow and then again early Saturday.  Otherwise, cold temperatures will continue to make headlines with a major cold snap in store of the end of the weekend and early next week that may bring us our first single digit highs of the season.

Wind Chill Advisory; Post Storm Survey

While you’re sipping your favorite warm beverage, pondering over what a good read would be this midday, why not select the snowmageddon ’09 storm summary from the NWS in La Crosse? :)

Wind Chill Advisory has been allowed to expire, but wind chills will still be sub-zero for the rest of the day. Brr!

Earlier…

Stay warm! Temperatures have dipped well below zero this morning and wind chills are about -20° to -30°. We are all under a Wind Chill Advisory until 11 AM Thursday.

Now that we are past the big ‘ol blizzard (who’s still shoveling?), please take a moment to participate in the Post Storm Survey. It’s an ongoing project designed to get feedback on how you perceived you were warned about the latest winter storm. It’s feedback to the National Weather Service and us media folks to find out what we’re doing right and even wrong when we convey watches/warnings/etc. to the public, i.e. YOU!

Snowfall Totals and Blowing Snow Concerns

Updated
The snow has come to an end in our area, but it looks like we may still have a bit of shoveling and re-shoveling to do as blowing snow continues to be a problem.  The Winter Storm Warning previously in effect until 6:00 this evening has been cancelled for most of southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa as well as most of western Wisconsin because of the issue of blowing snow.  North winds will occasionally gust to 25 and 30 miles per hour through the early part of the afternoon making for some hazardous road travel and creating some snow removal headaches.  Snowfall totals from last night and this morning’s event ranged from 2 to 3 inches in the north to 8 to 9 inches in extreme southeastern Minnesota, parts of northeastern Iowa and in southwestern Wisconsin with the majority of the viewing area falling into the 5 to 8 inch range.  Here are some of those area snow totals:
