The Coldest Morning of the Season So Far

We woke up to the coldest morning of the season today as strong high pressure set the stage for a clear, frosty, winter-like morning across the area.  Under the cloud-free skies and with nearly calm winds, our temperatures took a nose dive overnight into our Tuesday morning as the vast majority of the local area found itself in the teens for the first time since the first week of March.  While it certainly was a little cooler than normal for today’s date, Rochester’s morning low of 17° certainly wasn’t anywhere near the record of -4° set in 1986, but it definitely was a reminder of what late fall can bring in this climate.  If you’re not quite ready for this type of temperatures scheme, there is good news for you, however.  Slightly milder, more seasonal weather is expected for the remainder of the week and likely next week as well, so 20s and 30s will be more common than teens.

The coldest low temps of the season so far for just about everybody today.

Some more local morning temperatures.

A Chilly, and in Some Cases, Frosty Morning

We’re really getting our first taste of true fall weather today, and not just September’s version of autumn, but more of an early October feel in the air for our Tuesday.  This is thanks to a strong area of Canadian high pressure that is moving through the Upper Mississippi Valley, drawing in unseasonably cool, dry air from up north, allowing us to see 30s on the map for the first time since April and a few patches of frost as well.  The development of frost wasn’t a surprise for us, in fact there was less than we’d thought there might be thanks to some pesky clouds that blanketed much of southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa for the middle portion of the overnight period, keeping temperatures up a few degrees.

Incidentally, the averages for this time of the year are 71/49 in Rochester.

A small patch of frost on the roof of Peter Kramer in Rollingstone, MN.Morning lows for Tuesday, September 18th. The first 30s of the season!

The Coolest Morning of the Summer So Far. More On the Way?

As promised, our week of more temperate, comfortable weather led up to the coolest night of the season to date as Friday night’s clear skies, dry air and light winds yielded temperatures mainly in the 40s across the area.  Some spots were closer to the 30s than the 50s!  That strong Canadian high pressure that brought us a cool night and a gorgeous Saturday is gliding peacefully to the east and on its heels is a storm system that will bring clouds and rain to the area for Sunday and will be followed by a warming pattern that will lead to the first widespread 80s in what will have been nearly a week this Wednesday as that warm surges northward ahead of yet another potent cold front.  Anyway, let’s look at some of those morning temperatures across our local area:

Saturday morning felt like September. We may weather like this again at the end of next week.

The Rain Moves Out and a Cool Spell Begins

After a couple of turbulent, rainy days in the area, we’re looking at a stellar weather picture as we head into the weekend.  Cool, dry high pressure of Canadian origin is settling into the western Great Lakes and Upper Mississippi Valley, feeding us some crisp, fall-like air for our “Finally Friday” with temperatures that are cooler than normal and more typical of September.  We’ve been seeing 70 degree weather a little more often in recent days with a change in the weather pattern from the July weather pattern that just about cooked us and led to the fourth warmest July in Rochester history.  Our current cool, dry spell comes on the heels of a couple of fairly minor storm systems that brought showers and thunderstorms and even a little severe weather to the local area.

We’ll have a sunny pleasant day today and then a clear, crisp, cool night tonight with low temperatures perhaps dropping to the 40s for the first time in much of the area since early June. No, it’s not a sign that fall is right around the corner…not yet anyway, but it is a sign that we’re in August and cool spells happen every now and then this time of the year. Up north, International Falls saw its first 30 something temperature in a couple of months, so you know the Canadian air mass that’s moving in is going to make for an “extra blanket on the bed” type scenario for us as well, even if it’s just 48 or 49 instead of 37° as it was early this morning up there.

While we were just slightly on the cool side this morning, areas up north experienced a little bit of September weather this morning.

The weekend looks to feature a continuation of this cool, comfortable theme as highs will be in the mid 70s Saturday and Sunday with Sunday looking to be the gloomier of the two days as scattered showers and a few thunderstorms will be possible through most of the day.

A Cool Morning

In typical August fashion we’re experiencing a little more variety in our weather these days including more 70s than the past couple of months and even cooler morning temperatures.  This morning we experienced the coolest morning in several weeks for most of us including the coolest official morning low temperature in Rochester with 52°.  The last time we were this cool was June 13, when we reached 50°.  Listed below are some local morning low temperatures from the La Crosse NWS office’s forecast area.  The cool high pressure that brought us blue skies, low humidity, and highs in the 70s Sunday will return later this week with more 70s possible from Thursday through the early part of next week.  Refreshing indeed!

We awoke to some of the coolest temps of the season this morning with a lot of 50s and even a few 40s on the map.

The Coldest Morning in A Couple of Weeks

For the first time this month and actually a couple of weeks, we’re experiencing some seasonably cold weather today thanks to the arrival of colder, drier air under a broad area of Canadian high pressure.  We’re enjoying a sunny, but seasonably cold day with both low and high temperatures across the area close to the climate averages of 26° and 10° respectively.  Here’s a look at some of the regional temperatures from the past 24 hours.

Seasonably cold temperatures this morning. The coldest temperatures of February so far.

We'll have a slight warm up tomorrow and then even colder air will slide in for Friday and Saturday with our first sub zero temperatures in two weeks likely to occur Friday night.

A Cold Friday Morning, But A Warmer Weekend Ahead

Thanks to some strong high pressure that scoured the clouds out of the region and a cool, dry air mass, we managed to experience enough radiational cooling to allow our temperatures this morning to drop to the coldest levels of the season so far.  While there were mainly 20 degree temperatures in our area, some spots made it into the teens for the first time in several months.  Here’s a look at some of the specific morning lows in our viewing area:

The coldest temperatures of the season so far in our area.

These readings are actually 10 to 15 degrees cooler than average for low temperatures in early November and more typical of what we might see over Thanksgiving weekend rather than the first weekend of the month.  Still, we have to remember that it is November and just about anything can happen this time of the year from with the possibilities ranging from snow to thunderstorms and temperatures in the teens to the 70s very possible.  The good news is we do have warmer air surging in from the south and southwest for the weekend and highs will be in the 50s and 60s while lows will likely stay above freezing at least for the next couple of nights.

Here are some more low temperatures from our Friday morning:

Feeling Like the Tundra Today

Arctic high pressure has brought us some bitterly cold weather for our Friday.  We’re experiencing the coldest temperatures in a couple of years this morning with -20 to -30 readings common in our local area and even colder stuff than that in northern Minnesota.  Rochester officially bottomed out at -22°, the coldest temperature recorded since January 16, 2009 when we reached -26°.  Thankfully, slightly warmer air is going to be pushing into the area through the course of the day today, slowly warming us to near zero by this evening.  The rest of the weekend still looks chilly, but nothing as cold as last night!  We’ll have lows slightly below zero for the next couple of night with highs closer to 10° by tomorrow.

Here’s a look at some of the frigid, Yukon-like morning low temperatures we registered earlier today:

The Coolest Morning in a While

Now that fall weather has returned to our region, we’re going to have get used to cooler mornings like today with a lot of 30 degree readings around the area.  It’s been more than a week since the last time we had widespread frost and morning low temperatures commonly below 40° and it looks like this will be more the rule than the exception for the foreseeable future.  There will be a nice warm up today, however, as warm air blows into the Upper Mississippi Valley ahead of a storm system and its associated cold front.  Because of that quick blast of warmth, we’ll still be able to manage highs in the upper 60s in most spots even after our chilly start to the day.  That cold front will swing through the area during the mid afternoon hours, but won’t produce any rainfall for us.  Instead it’ll be producing some rather gusty winds across the area with southwest winds turning to the northwest as the front swings through the region.  Some of those gusts will be around 30 miles per hour during the midday and afternoon hours before the winds die down this evening with the loss of daytime heating.  Morning lows tomorrow will be similar to today’s as another batch of cool, dry air sinks into Minnesota, Wisconsin, and north Iowa behind today’s cold front.  Keep in mind that our average low this time of the year is in the upper 30s, so what we have now and will be dealing with in the next several days is typical for mid October.

Here’s a look at some of this morning’s seasonably cool low temperatures:

Another Chilly Morning

We woke up to another frosty morning today with temperatures mainly in the 30s across the local area.  In fact, some locations recorded the coldest readings of the season so far.  Rochester dropped to 33° this morning, the coldest temperature since spring and the third day to start in the 30s.  Mason City, Iowa bottomed out at 28° and some locations in southwestern Wisconsin had lows in the middle 20s.  All of this is thanks to a cold Canadian air mass under a strong area of high pressure that has kept our skies clear and our winds calm, allowing for radiational cooling.  If you’re thinking the days of short sleeved shirts and shorts are over, you may be in for a pleasant surprise this week as warmer air is going to build back into the Upper Midwest, giving us a taste of indian summer.  Look for highs to reach into the 70s by mid week.

Here’s a look at some of this morning’s low temperatures:
