Winter Storm Watch for Monday

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories will be in effect from Monday morning through Tuesday noon

3:45pm update: Graphic to the left is the latest we have for headlines for Monday’s event. Advisories & Warnings  will go into effect Monday morning, and end around noon on Tuesday.

Earlier updates:

Graphic will be up later today, but in the meantime, a Winter Storm Watch will be in effect Monday morning through late Monday for the following counties:
Goodhue, Rice, Dodge, Wabasha, Winona, Olmsted, Mower, Houston, Fillmore, Vernon, Trempealeau, Buffalo, La Crosse.

Snow will start during early Monday morning and persist through the night. My thinkings right now are for 5-8″ for the area in the watch, with 3-5″ outside of the watch. Some freezing drizzle may mix in as well, especially outside of the watch. This snow will be a bit heavier, not the fluffy factor of the recent storms. It will also be a bit breezy, but we shouldn’t have the blowing and drifting issues of recent either, because of the thicker snow. Snow should taper off Tuesday morning. The heaviest will be falling during the afternoon and evening hours on Monday.

More snow is expected on Thursday…and keep in mind…we’re only 3.6″ shy of the #1 spot for snowiest Decembers in Rochester. Cheers!

P.S. The Twin Cities are also included in the Watch. For those headed to the Vikings game…keep this in mind.

Rainy start to the week

Showers and t-storms have been slow on the move eastward this morning, but they will continue to do so. Rainfall amounts coming in from around Mason City have been about a quarter of an inch, a little heavier than previously expected, but as I mentioned, these guys are slow movers.

Wouldn’t be overly surprised to see some rainfall amounts edge closer to the .40-.50″ amounts by the time the rain’s out of here this afternoon, especially if you get under a heavier shower/t-shower.

These storms aren’t severe here, but a few could teeter on the stronger side, with some pea-sized hail.

Blame it on a warm front near us! Shower chances will back off this evening and overnight, with a warm & breezy Tuesday. With that front hanging out nearby us, t-storm chances will be possible the next couple of days, especially Wednesday. The mild weather stick around for the week.

1/11/09: Blizzard Watch

10:00 p.m. update: Nothing new to report on – all watches and advisories stand as of right now. Ted will have the latest on the NewsCenter Today bright and early Monday morning. If conditions end up as they are looking right now, we will most likely have a live blog up and running by tomorrow afternoon.

3:30 p.m. update: Blizzard Watches continue for the areas mentioned below for Monday afternoon into Monday late evening.

A Winter Weather Advisory, for snow and blowing snow, has been issued for all of southeast and southern Minnesota, and a few counties in northeast Iowa (Mitchell, Floyd, Howard, Chickasaw, Allamakee, Winneshiek, Fayette). The Winter Weather Advisory runs from 9 am Monday to 3 pm Monday for the counties also included in the Blizzard Watch; elsewhere, the advisory runs from 9 am Monday to Midnight.

Counties not in the Blizzard Watch can still expect to see near white-out conditions on Monday evening.

8:45 a.m. (Sunday) update: The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Watch for several counties in our area. This is in effect from Monday afternoon into Monday evening. Counties included are: Dodge, Mower, Blue Earth, Steele, Waseca, Martin, Faribault, Freeborn counties  in Minnesota; Chickasaw, Floyd, Howard, Mitchell, Emmet, Kossuth, Winnebago, Worth, Wright, Franklin, and Cerro Gordo counties in Iowa.

Snow will fall tomorrow morning, and although totals won’t be extreme (1-3″ looking likely, with a few higher totals), it will be the high winds behind the system on Monday afternoon that will 1) blow snow 2) create near-white out conditions and 3) plummet wind chills to -25 to -35 at times. This is the first punch of the arctic air that will be arriving this week.

We’ll keep tabs on this throughout the day right here – if any more counties are added to the blizzard watch, if any are dropped, if any other advisories are issued. Stay tuned!

Cold Monday; Warmer Tuesday

The latest disturbance to affect us will arrive Monday. It’ll pack some clouds, some snow showers…basically a repeat of the weekend…but with colder air. Highs tomorrow will be reached mainly in the early afternoon hours; temps will then start to drop as colder air invades the area. Look for wake-up temps Tuesday morning in the middle teens. A nice warm up still looks likely by mid-week, before the next brief cool down, and even some snow, will arrive by Friday.

Don’t forget to stop by our Birthday Week Trivia!
