It looks as though we dodged a bullet in our weather on Wednesday as the cold front that swept through the region bringing scattered showers to the area, stalled to the south and east of the viewing area, across the eastern part of Iowa and along the Illinois-Wisconsin border, serving as the focus for some pretty intense and heavy showers and thunderstorms. Wave after wave of heavy rain went across the Dubuque, Iowa-Galena, Illinois area, producing incredibly heavy rainfall during the overnight hours into early this morning leading to some localized flooding that will continue for a few days as streams and rivers continue to rise from the additional runoff. The official rainfall for Galena as of early this morning was a staggering 13.45 inches! Here’s a look at the National Weather Service’s NEXRAD radar estimates from the overnight event and a list of some of the heaviest rainfall totals from that area:

National Weather Service NEXRAD estimates that anywhere from 6 to 14 inches of rain fell in far northwestern Illinois and eastern Iowa between Wednesday evening and early Thursday morning.
