Snowfall Forecast Today Through the Next Week

A weak storm system from the west is spreading clouds and light snow across the local area today. This will be a lighter snow event for us than the past two to affect the region last Friday and Monday of this week as only about an inch of accumulation is expected for the most part. The evening commute may be a little tricky because of the potential for a few extra slick spots on the street and highways from the afternoon to early evening snow, but as long as everyone takes their time and expects a slight delay, it shouldn’t be cataclysmic. The heaviest amounts in the region look to accumulate north of Rochester toward the Twin Cities and even north of there as two inches will be possible for some locations in northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin.

Snowfall will occur through the afternoon with a sharp drop off in intensity after sunset. Amounts will be light, with the highest totals to the north.

Behind this storm system we’ll have gusty, colder weather with some sunshine tomorrow and then a chance for a few light snow showers tomorrow night.  Accumulations tomorrow night will be light with less than half an inch expected.  We’ll have chilly sunshine and highs in the teens on Sunday with snow showers and little if any accumulation Monday.  A bigger storm system Tuesday into early Wednesday will bring a mixture of rain and snow and then some light accumulations of snow to the area.  Snow showers and flurries will be possible Thursday and Friday, so it’ll be an active pattern, but generally speaking, only light snow is expected in the next week while high temperatures look to remain quite mild in the longer term as highs will be in the lower and mid 30s from Monday through next Friday.

Some Much Needed Rain in the Area

Prior to our soaking showers and thunderstorms last night and early this morning, we’d been getting pretty dry across the area. It seems strange to say that we were actually hoping for rain from this storm system given that most of the spring until just recently, we were wishing for sunshine and a break from the rain and days like today were all too common. However, looking at the calendar, before last evening here in Rochester, we were a full inch of rainfall below normal for the month of June and had only measured 0.16″ in the previous two weeks making lawns look a little brownish. The outlook for the rest of today is looking a little less soggy with just a couple hundredths of an inch expected in the way of rain this afternoon and evening before this storm systme pushes away to the east, leaving us in the sunhshine for the rest of the weekend. Here’s as look at some of last night’s rainfall totals. Notice that the heaviest amounts were measured in northern Iowa where one to two inches fell in many locations. Slightly lighter amounts fell in southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

Friday Night Playoff Football Forecast

It’s a crisp, cool, clear fall day today as high pressure takes control of our region’s weather.  We’ll have highs in the lower 40s this afternoon with a slight northwest breeze while the weekend will feature plenty of sunshine and a nice warm up.

For those heading out this evening for some exciting high school playoff football action, we actually have a quiet and seasonably cool night ahead of us.  The winds will be on the light side and temperatures will fall off into the 30s in time for kickoff.

We have a crisp and seasonably cool evening ahead of us with temperatures in the 30s across the local area.

Temperatures will cool to around 32° for the fourth quarter while winds will be rather light.

High temperatures over the weekend will make their way back into the “above average” category with afternoon readings likely in the 50s tomorrow and Sunday.

Friday’s rainfall totals & what’s in store for us

By far, the severe weather on Friday was limited to the extreme southeastern portion of Minnesota, but was more widespread across Wisconsin. There, reports of tornadoes and damaging winds (up to 100mph!) did their number across the state, toppling trees and knocking out power to many. Some were sent to the hospital with injuries in my hometown, Neenah, when a large branch fell off a tree at Riverside Park, where a fundraising concert was taking place. If you’re interested in the damage repots from there, see the NWS Green Bay and NWS Milwaukee/Sullivan (also, here) for storm damage info for those areas.

In any case, we did pick up some quick rainfall for some of the area Friday afternoon. Here’s a look at the submitted rainfall totals below from the NWS La Crosse.

Also, you won’t have rain to worry about this weekend. It’ll just be hazy, hot, and humid through Monday. A cold front late Monday night/Tuesday morning will bring the next rain chance, and will cool us off into mid next week. Enjoy the summery stretch!

Quick chat on severe weather potential

Steph notes: Updated at 12:45 pm for updated SPC outlook – now in a Moderate risk for Saturday.

Quick chat on severe weather potential.

Friday, July 16th slight risk

Friday: Slight risk for severe storms. Activity will develop mid-afternoon and into the evening, but will be isolated in nature. I’m not expecting anything full-blown today. There’s just not much to support it. There’s a weak surface front that’ll swing through, and with decent instability today, some storms should pop.

July 17th moderate risk

Saturday: Moderate risk for severe weather, with a better chance of more widespread activity, later in the evening and into the first part of the overnight. We’ll have to watch this one a little more closely. Right now it looks to be a high wind threat for us, but there could be an enhanced tornado threat, depending on where in the area those first cells fire.

And Saturday will be gross, sticky, and miserable – think a step below what we saw Wednesday (but dew points won’t be as icky – still in the 70s, however).

I think most of the day will be sunny, which is why we’ll end up in the low 90s, but if the warm front brings some clouds and rumbles with it earlier in the day, we’ll cut back our temperatures.

Bottom line though- the most active part of the day will be when the cold front pushes through (late evening/first part of the overnight), and with such a warm and humid airmass in place, there should be plenty of instability for strong to severe storms to develop.
