Breaking Down The Arctic Blast

We didn’t pick up any snow as an Arctic cold front sliced through the area on Saturday, but it sure made it’s presence felt in other ways.  Wind gusts around the area topped 50mph in a lot  of spots.   Here’s a look at a select few from Saturday afternoon/evening.

Behind a cold front temperatures drop, but with this Arctic cold front Saturday afternoon, temperatures fell off a cliff.  The highs made their way into the 40s early, and by the evening, the wind chills were in the teens below zero.  Here is a timeline as the temps dropped Saturday.

Arctic air will continue to pour into the area over the next several days.  The Upper Air Pattern shows the warmer air in the west indicated by the orange and yellows and the bitter cold coming out of Canada by the darker purples.  The “Polar Vortex” is in play this time around.  You can clearly see the closed doughnut hole in southern Canada which represents the center of it.  It usually hangs out in northern Canada, but has drifted south supplying the eastern two thirds of the country with Arctic air.  The coldest air in this part of the world is found under that Polar Vortex.

In my opinion this Arctic outbreak is extremely impressive.  We will likely see afternoon highs the coldest we have seen in over four years and we are doing it without snow on the ground.  Snow acts as a refrigerator and helps the atmosphere cool much faster when we have a good base on the ground.  We could be flirting with records if we had some snow.  While it is going to be extremely cold over the next week and especially over the next couple of days, it could be MUCH colder if we had some snow on the ground.

Here is just a list of where this cold stands in perspective with the record for the day and the record all time.  It was pretty chilly back in the 1800s!  While we won’t be as cold as the temperatures with the actual air temperature, wind chills Monday and Tuesday morning could be in that ball park!  Stay warm.  It only takes 30 min or so to get frostbite with exposed skin with these dangerous wind chills!

Windy and Warm

What a difference a day makes!  We had such a cold, blustery, gray start to the week with 30s and 40s across the local map on Monday, but now with a massive blast of warm air affecting us today to go with some nice late March sunshine, we’re talking about near record warmth again.  A Wind Advisory is in effect until 7:00 this evening for most of the KTTC viewing area as a storm system to our north is working to not only pull in some unseasonably mild air for our Tuesday, but it’s doing so with the help of some 40 to 50 mile per hour wind gusts.  Look for those gusts to remain strong through the heart of the afternoon and then subside this evening.  A cold front will slide through the area this afternoon, leveling off those temperatures in the lower and middle 70s, but keeping those winds quite gusty.  A second front on the tail end of that storm system to our north will ten draw in some more seasonably cool weather for tonight and tomorrow with a slight west breeze ahead for our Wednesday and highs in the 50s.  Incidentally, the record high for today in Rochester is 74, and we’ll be right around that through the afternoon.

Here are some of the peak wind gusts from across the area today:

November 10, 1975: Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

In the interest of blog efficiency, I’m recycling this post that Meteorologist Ted Schmidt put together last year. Today is the anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

It was just two weeks ago that we experienced one of the windiest weather events in our region’s history when an intense low pressure system cranked up our winds for two days and gusts occasionally reached 60 miles per hour.  During that event, we drew a number of comparisons to some historical autumn wind storms in the western Great Lakes, including the one in November 1975 that led to the infamous sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald the huge ore freighter, a tragedy that claimed the lives of all 29 men on board.  Today as we mark the 35th anniversary of the ship’s sinking, we look back at the weather conditions that created the strong winds and gigantic waves on Lake Superior.

The S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald

The storm system that ultimately moved through Lake Superior in November, 1975 took almost the same path as the storm system that affected us last month and the wind speeds were similar with gusts in the 60 mile per hour range noted in most locations.  However, over the open waters of Lake Superior, the winds during the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking may have been even stronger with some gusts of 80 miles per hour registered and wave heights reaching 30 feet.  There is much to to be said about the incident and the timeline that led up to the sinking that occurred at 7:30 on the evening of November 10, 1975 so here are a couple of helpful sites that detail the events of that day.

“The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald”   (A look at the weather conditions and story of the ship.  It shows a couple of interesting charts that explain the wave action in relation to the wind speed and direction in that massive storm.)

Windy, Raw Thursday

This morning’s cold front and associated storm system stirred up strong winds throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Wind gusts were awfully close to 60mph at times, and there were branches – and even a few trees – down in many lawns today. Here are some select station reports from the National Weather Service office in La Crosse. Wind gusts over 50mph were fairly common.

The Science Behind The Tragedy

You may have heard that a stage collapsed at the Indiana State Fair last night killing 5 people and injuring over 40.  Eyewitness accounts say that there was not even a storm going on when the 60-70mph wind gusts toppled over the stage.  How can this be?  Here is what happened.  The graphic

http://twitpic.com/660u2s

by Brad Panovich of WCNC shows a strong line of thunderstorms to the west of the Indiana State fairgrounds.  I want to point out the faint line of bluish green out ahead of the red storm cells.   The yellow arrows on this map are pointing to it.  This is the gust front.  A gust front is the leading edge of rain cooled air flowing out of a thunderstorm.  A gust front forms when rain starts to fall out of a thunderstorms.  This rain will encounter dry air below it as it falls through the atmosphere.  As a result, the air around the rain is cooled.  Cooler air is heavier than warm air and thus the air rushes rapidly to the ground.  When this air hits the ground it has no where to go but out in every direction.  This gust front then races out ahead of the initial thunderstorm.  On high resolution radar, you can see the gust front.  As the air is lifted back up from the force of  the air, it will condense and form clouds and even some rain that the radar will pick up.   The gust front was responsible for taking down the stage.  Sometimes the winds will be very strong and can produce damage (as it did in this case) before the actual storm even arrives.

Rain Sunday Morning, More Tonight

Here is a look at the some of the rain totals in the viewing area from Sunday morning.  Some places saw heavier thunderstorms than others and therefore rain totals differed greatly from place to place.  Check it out!

We will be under the gun for possible severe weather again and we will add to these twelve hour totals from Sunday morning as heavy rain is expected late tonight and through the early morning Monday.

Wet April And Windy Day 1st Day of May

Finally the chilly month of April has come to an end, but may didn’t start off any better.  As Randy Brock has pointed out, 2 days has been the longest consecutive day streak we have seen rain free for quite sometime.  All that rain has added up to total the 16th wettest April on record.  Records date back all the way to 1886, so this is a pretty incredible feat!!  We ended the month with 4.03 inches of precip, about an inch over the monthly average.  Our friends at the NWS in La Crosse have compiled a list of the top 20 wettest April’s on record.

St. Louis Tornadoes

Another tornado outbreak hit last night…this time near downtown St. Louis.  Luckily the downtown area was spared.  A pair of supercell thunderstorms, both containing tornadoes split the city…one went north and one went south.  The St. Louis international  airport took a direct hit though.  Preliminary damage estimates show that an EF-4 hit a town just north of the city.  We are still waiting on damage assessment from the airport to determine the strength of that twister.

If you think this has been a crazy April in terms of Severe Weather…well you are right.  Before yesterday’s outbreak there have been a total of  329 tornadoes, which is a new record for the month of April and we still have  7 days left in the month to add to that total.  The previous record was 267 tornadoes set back in 1974.  April on average sees 163 tornadoes, so it has been very busy.
