An Adjustment in the Final Winter Snowfall Total

Normally we wouldn’t even be talking about the seasonal snowfall totals this far into May because the last of our measurable snow would have occurred weeks or even months ago, but because of our crazy spring that has featured 41.7 inches since of snow officially since March first (the start of “meteorological spring”) we’re posting this now.  The huge snow storm last week produced enough snow in two days to push us into fourth place overall for annual snowfall.  We received 14.0 inches on Thursday in what turned out to be the fourth snowiest single day of measurable snowfall in Rochester’s history and then another half inch fell on Friday in a secondary wave, pushing us into fourth place on that list.  The National Weather Service adjusted the official total earlier this week from 0.3 inches on Friday to 0.5 inches, a small change that made a big difference in our statistical standing.

An unusually cold and snowy spring pushed Rochester into the top ten chart for annual snowfall. 57.1 inches fell after January.

An unusually cold and snowy spring pushed Rochester into the top ten chart for annual snowfall. 57.1 inches fell after January.

Given that high temperatures in the 50s, 60s, 70s and possibly 80s are being forecast for the next couple of weeks, we’re thinking snowfall is finished for the season, but we then again we thought that last month too, so stay tuned…and keep your fingers crossed that spring is here to stay!

Winter Storm Update

Here we ago again! A couple of weeks removed from the biggest snow storm we have seen in the last two Winters and we are already talking about a storm that has the potential to one up that.  First to get you up to speed, here’s where we stand so far for the entire Winter.  We are sitting about 9″ below in the snowfall department, but we will have a chance to make most of, if not all of it up with this next Winter Storm.

F ADVISORY

Now on to the storm.  It will likely come in two distinct waves.  The first overnight and into late Tuesday morning with second push of moderate to heavy snow falling from Monday evening into Tuesday afternoon.  In between, during Monday afternoon, lighter snow will persist with a few breaks.  We could have a couple of inches on the ground by the morning commute, especially in Austin, Albert Lea and surrounding areas.  A general 2-4″ can be expected by Monday evening with the initial burst of moderate to heavy snow.  The better chance for the significant accumulation will come with the second push.  Below is how the storm will likely play out.

F ADVISORY

Above is the first band of snow moving in overnight that could cause a slippery morning commute.  After this initial band moves through, the snow is expected to become lighter for the time being until it picks up again later in the evening.

F ADVISORY

The second burst of moderate to heavy is snow is likely where we will pick up most of our accumulation.  Monday night is when we will likely see the heaviest snow.  The snow is expected to shut off by the late afternoon on Tuesday.  This will be a long duration snow event with two distinct snow episodes.  Here is the latest.  Isolated higher amounts could be possible in the purple outline.

F ADVISORY

A change in the track could have big impacts on the forecast.  Stay with KTTC for the latest.

Winona — 4″

KTTC Studios (NW Rochester) –3.5″

A Snowy Morning, More Is On The Way

Yet another clipper system slid through the region Monday night, producing two distinct bands of snow in the area; one around midnight and another during the morning commute. We picked uo about half an inch in the first round and one to three inches with the quick burst of heavier activity in the morning. It looks like another weak disturbance will bring half an inch to an inch of snow between Wednesday afternoon and evening through early Thursday. A heavier round of snow still lurks in the 7 day forecast for the weekend, especially on Sunday, but it’s too early to pin down too many details at this point. In the meantime, here’s a look at some of Tuesday morning’s snowfall totals from the National Weather Service in LaCrosse:

Another Day, Another Dusting of Snow

Our active, “Albert Clipper heavy” weather pattern continues this week as each day seems to bring a light “dusting” of snow and temperatures remain fairly typical for this time of the year. In other words, no arctic air or temps in the 40s to talk about right now. We’ve had four of these fast moving, light snow producing clipper type systems in the past five days and it looks like we’ll have have another two or so this week before the pattern changes. The next round will be tonight when an inch or so of snow is expected to fall in much of the area. Another may bring less than an inch late Wednesday and Wednesday night. Here’s a look at some of the snowfall amounts from Sunday night’s snow event. The totals listed were compiled by the National Weather Service in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The seasonal snowfall total for Rochester currently stands at 19.9 inches. We registered 24 inches in all of last winter, so we’re not far from surpassing that total already this season.

Feb 13, 2012 Snowfall Totals

The graphic below is a general idea of yesterday’s snowfall. Unofficial totals. While Rochester is in the 2-3″ band, our official total at the airport is 1.8″. I got the same at my house in southeast Rochester.

Here are some other totals reported to the NWS La Crosse office. Grand Meadow was the big winner at 3″, Austin was shortly behind at 2.5″.

Winter 2011-12 Snowfall: 3rd Place so far

Rochester has received 16.1″ of snowfall this season so far. 15.9″ for meteorological winter (since December 1st). Snowfall seasons are measured from July 1st through June 30th, just to make sure there aren’t any loopholes. So, if we were to not receive any additional accumulation of snow the rest of the season, this would be the 3rd lowest snow on a season ever…on record. Below are the records for seasonal snowfall in Rochester. It has been many years since any snowfall season hit the top 10 lowest…since the 1967-68 season.

Seasonal Snowfall

Highest Lowest
1. 84.7″ 1996-97 1. 9.1″ 1967-68

Snowfall Totals for January 23rd

After a day of freezing drizzle, we had to deal with some pretty messy road conditions on Monday morning thanks to the addition of some light to moderate snowfall across the area.  Totals were generally in a one to three inch range with a few outliers:

Rochester picked up 2.6 inches of snow officially, while we measured 3.0 inches her at KTTC. That brings our total to 7.4 inches for January and 16.0 inches for the winter which is still a foot of snow below average for the season.
We’ll have just a couple of rounds of light snow or flurries in the coming days, but little or no accumulation is expected at least for another week. Unfortunately, one of those chances is tonight as a weak disturbance brings some clouds and light snow showers to the region for the overnight period, likely interfering with our chances of seeing what looks to be an impressive aurora show (northern lights.) Keep your fingers crossed, perhaps there will be a few breaks in the clouds!

Active Weather Week

It looks like we will be seeing more of the flakes once we get past the weekend.  Sunday looks to be pleasant with temps right around the freezing mark, but then some changes come back into the forecast.  For all the snow lovers it looks like we will get some more more accumulating snow by the end of the week, but it will come in spurts.  That one big storm is still not showing up on the radar at this point.

It looks like the next chance for accumulating snow could come during the second half Monday and through the morning hours of  Tuesday as an upper level disturbance slides by the area.

Futurecast showing our next chance of snow later in the day on Monday

We should get a break from the snow until another  upper lever system slides by on Thursday and again on Friday.  The timing of these systems could change as the days go on, but we will continue to monitor them and fine tune timing issues as we get closer.  Again, not expecting anything major with these few features that will be passing through over the next 7 days, but a couple inches here and a couples inches there could add up by the weekend for snow lovers.  Actual totals for each little wave will be fine tuned as they get closer as well.
