Birthdays and Temperatures

You’ll find a handy-dandy graphic on the left hand side of the blog that will direct you to our birthday week funness. So I just made up the word funness, but it’s our birthdays, and we’ll make up words if we want to.

Our highs this week will stall in the 40s - it’ll feel cooler, but those highs are actually still above normal. We’ve managed to see 12 out of 14 days in November with highs in the 50s and 60s; the other 2 days were spent in the 40s. For a month where the average high temperature drops to the 30s, that’s pretty impressive!

Fall Foto Fun; Sunday Weather

fall_5-7_72Tonight’s photo is from Roger, who took this at Bancroft Bay in Albert Lea this fall. If only we had the temperatures we had today then to take in all the colors!

We’ll have more clouds and a small chance for PM showers/drizzle - but enough warm air where we’ll still see highs near 60. Don’t let the extra clouds get to you. Enjoy!

Read All About It! The Fantastic October ‘09

Congrats on making it through one of the weirdest Octobers in Rochester’s recent history. 2nd wettest on record, snow-y, cold, and generally not feeling very fall-ish. Infact, as of today, I see most of the leaves are off the trees and in my yard.

That being said, enjoy some October climate history from the NWS La Crosse. Included is the line-up of soggy Octobers.

A warm front today brought us our fantastically mild Sunday; a cold front sweeping through overnight will give way to slightly cooler, but still seasonably mild, temps for Monday. Look for a breezy afternoon as well, with winds out of the northwest about 10-20mph. Not too shabby of a start to November.

Craptastic Thursday and Friday!

We have quite a bit of fog to contend with this morning. That’s thanks to plenty ‘o low level moisture being drawn into our area; along with that, the lack of good winds and sun to whisk it on out of here. We also have areas of drizzle, and we’ll keep the gray skies going for the rest of our Thursday.

Winds will kick up late tonight and into our Thursday as our well-advertised area of low pressure heads this way. Rain will be found area-wide during Thursday, with even some thunder thrown in. Although our temps will work into the mid to upper 50s, it by far won’t be feeling that spectacular. :)

Cold front sweeps through on Friday, but the bulk of the precip will be done. Friday into Saturday morning will be brisk, but for all your little ghouls and goblins, Saturday evening is looking dry.

Don’t forget to vote in our uber-spooky Pumpkin Carving Contest! Voting ends Saturday.

This Is Not A Test: Winter Weather Advisory

I so incredibly wish I were making this up, but I’m not. A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from Sunday night into Sunday afternoon for a good chunk of our area. This includes the Albert Lea, Fairmont, Clarion, Owatonna, Faribault, Cannon Falls areas, and points north and west (yes, the Twin Cities, too).

Light snow will spread into the area from west to east overnight, and is expected to continue to fall through the morning hours into the early afternoon. Temperatures will be cool enough for snow formation, but even in southern Minnesota, and northern Iowa, there’s enough warmer air hanging around nearby where we could easily see this morph into a rain/snow/slushy mix.

1-3″ of accumulating snow will be possible in the advisory area. But, here’s my digression about snowfalls this time of the year: 1) it won’t stick and 2) it will have a hard time sticking to the ground and especially well-traveled surfaces. Our ground is still way too warm to give any flakes that hit the ground a sufficient chances to stick around and pile up.

Now that you’re breathing calmly again, this is still our first bona fide snow threat for the season. Is it wacky? Yes, but not out of the question. Rochester typically sees its first snowfall of the year around the middle of the month. The earliest snowfall (Trace) fell back on September 14th in 1961. The earliest half inch fell October 1st in 1999. The earliest over 2″ whopper (3.9″) fell on October 6th in 1982.

Stay tuned to the NewsCenter tonight at 5 and also after the game. We’ll keep you updated on our Facebook page, too! Bottom line: don’t panic, but do expect to take some extra time driving around Monday.
